Buffalo Grove is located around 35 miles northwest of Chicago and overlaps both Cook and Lake Counties. Named by the Potowatomi tribe for the bison found in the area during the 1830s, this picturesque village is well-known for its charming country vibe amid impressive growth – qualities that make it an ideal community for raising a family.
Buffalo Grove was incorporated in 1958 with a population of only 164 and an area of only around 72 acres. Today, around 41,000 people live in the village and the physical size has expanded to more than 6,000 acres. The village’s Comprehensive Plan targets an eventual total area of 7,202 acres and population of 48,000 residents.
Buffalo Grove has been named one of the best places to live in the United States by Money Magazine. The village has a robust economy, hosting the headquarters or offices of some of the country’s largest corporations. It makes a great bedroom community for Chicago, with quick access to the I94 and a Metra train station providing convenient access to the Windy City’s downtown area.
The community’s amazing growth since its incorporation is not one of rapid urbanization. Surrounded by forests, lakes, creeks, and parkland, Buffalo Grove has retained a distinct small-town appeal where neighbors get together during regular community events. The welcoming, tree-lined streets feature traditional style homes that exude warmth. The village’s amenities include golf courses, swimming pools, and sports courts, all of which encourage a healthy lifestyle.
Buffalo Grove is served by four school districts that include several top-rated schools. It is also home to the private St. Mary Catholic School, founded in 1899.
